Getting to Tarifa: Airports, Transfers and Travel Tips
Tarifa sits at the far southwestern tip of Spain — closer to Morocco than to Madrid, and further from the main tourist corridors than most Andalusian destinations. There is no direct train, no airport in the town itself, and no package holiday infrastructure to smooth your arrival. What there is, instead, is a drive through some of the most dramatic landscape in southern Spain, and the particular satisfaction of arriving somewhere that takes a little effort to reach.
Here is the most practical guide to getting here.
By Air: The Nearest Airports
Málaga Airport (AGP) — The main option
Distance from Tarifa: approximately 145 km — around 1 hour 45 minutes by car.
Málaga is the airport to use for most UK visitors. It is one of the best-connected airports in southern Spain, with direct flights from dozens of UK airports including London Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol and Birmingham. Carriers include British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2 and Vueling.
From Málaga, the drive to Tarifa follows the A-7 coastal motorway west through Marbella and Estepona before cutting south on the A-381 and A-7 to Tarifa. The road is largely fast and easy; allow two hours in summer with the possibility of some slowdown around Marbella.
Car hire at Málaga is competitive and straightforward. It is the recommended arrival route for most visitors, and having a car in Tarifa — while not strictly necessary within the town — opens up the surrounding beaches, national park, and easy day trips to Morocco or along the Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos.
Gibraltar Airport (GIB) — The closest option
Distance from Tarifa: approximately 35 km — around 45 minutes by car.
Gibraltar airport is dramatically closer to Tarifa than Málaga, but its flight connections are limited. British Airways operates direct flights from London Heathrow, and there are occasional services from other UK cities. If you can find a route that works, the short transfer is a significant advantage. Be aware that queues at the border crossing between Gibraltar and Spain can add time to your journey — allow extra time if travelling during peak periods.
Jerez Airport (XRY) — Worth checking
Distance from Tarifa: approximately 100 km — around 1 hour 15 minutes by car.
Jerez de la Frontera airport is a smaller hub with some low-cost connections, particularly Ryanair routes from the UK. If the timing and price work, it puts you closer to Tarifa than Málaga and avoids the Costa del Sol traffic. Check availability, as routes vary by season.
Seville Airport (SVQ)
Distance from Tarifa: approximately 195 km — around 2 hours 15 minutes by car.
Seville is a viable option if you want to combine Tarifa with time in the city — one of Spain's finest. The connection is straightforward on the AP-4 motorway via Jerez. It is not ideal as a pure Tarifa transfer given the additional distance.
The Drive from Málaga
The most scenic approach from Málaga is along the AP-7/A-7, which hugs the coast through the developed resort strip of the Costa del Sol before the landscape gradually shifts as you pass Gibraltar. As you turn south on the A-7 towards Tarifa, the road narrows, the mountains close in, and the wind turbines appear — hundreds of them, spinning on the ridges above. The Strait opens ahead and Africa becomes visible on the horizon. It is a good moment.
The drive can be done in under two hours in light traffic. In July and August, allow extra time through Marbella and Gibraltar on weekend afternoons.
Getting Around Once You're Here
Tarifa's old town and the main beach at Los Lances are both walkable from most accommodation in the centre. The town is small enough that a car is not necessary for day-to-day life.
That said, a car gives you access to:
- The wilder northern beaches (Valdevaqueros, Punta Paloma) — 10–15 minutes' drive
- The Bolonia beach and Roman ruins — 20 minutes
- Los Alcornocales Natural Park hiking and cycling routes
- The ferry port for day trips to Morocco (within walking distance of the centre)
Car hire in Tarifa is available but more limited than at the airports; picking up at Málaga or Gibraltar and keeping the car throughout your stay is usually the most practical approach.
The Ferry to Morocco
One practical note worth including here: the Tarifa–Tangier ferry is a genuinely easy add-on and one of the best things about being based here. FRS Maroc operates fast ferries that make the crossing in 35 minutes, running multiple times daily. Foot passengers only — no need to take a car. A day in Tangier, or a guided tour to Chefchaouen, makes for one of the more unusual day trips available from any European holiday base.
Terraza Atlántica is on the southern edge of Tarifa, elevated above the town with secure underground parking included — so arriving by car is entirely straightforward. Check availability if you'd like to use it as your base for exploring the Strait.
Come and see for yourself.
The terrace faces south. Africa on the horizon.
